could we maybe go up the space elevator and build a base there

i was thinking about the story that we got send to a planet to build a factory on it ,

so i thought would it be possible if we coudl go up the space elevator and build a base in space and go to other planets to find new ores / items to craft new items or get upgrades for the machines to run them

That's quite the departure of the current game and story, I must say.

Boss: "Go to planet Massage Letter (Letter something Letter). Build base. Destroy nature. Murder those fireball-shooting asshats, and prod the balloon dogs with your cattle prod!" 

Other employers: "Hooah!" *drill noises*

OP: "So like, can I build in space and go to other planets?"
