Space tick whale thing doesn't reset fall distance when bouncing off of it

I was jumping down from a very high height, a distance that would kill me. My plan was to bounce off a space tick walking down below. I succeeded in the bounce but once I landed (I had more than enough health to survive the impact from the space tick bounce), I still got killed, so I assume that the fall distance doesn't get reset when you bounce off the space tick.
