Parachute over head wenn not flying

The parachute doesn't consume. You can see it over your head when moving around.

Additional info:

Each time I open a parachute it stays open permanently until I unequip it. It does not consume the parachute (even when I unequip it). It will remain open even after I log out and back in, and will open again after I leave a vehicle.

My friend playing in the same game cannot see it opened, but can see my glide around as if it were open.

Were you a guest in multiplayer?

A comment in https://questions.satisfactorygame.com/1152/parachute-disappearing-from-inventory?show=1152#q1152 indicated that non-host players might not consume parachutes
